One of the biggest problems with smartphone displays currently, despite how advanced they have gotten, is that they can still break! Working in cellular retail I see a lot of cracked screens and smashed screens with wonderful stories to accompany them. But what if you had an unbreakable screen! Wouldn’t that be great?
Well that’s where LG steps in with their flexible OLED displays that can bend all sorts of ways without being destroyed. Both LG and Samsung have been working on these neat pieces of technology for a little while and it seems that LG is ready for mass production. According to Korea Times, LG will be start their mass production right away with the first device possibly coming out at the end of the year.
While the design possibilities are endless with these new flexible displays, it’s highly unlikely that we’ll be seeing any groundbreaking designs this year. Instead, the new displays will simply help out with the durability of the screens. It’ll be interesting to see if they still throw glass (Gorilla or Dragontail) on these still or if they’ll opt for plastic to cover the actual display to truly make it unbreakable.
