What the update did
The update fixed the recent GPS and 911 problem affecting both phones. It also brought Sense UI, HTC’s custom interface.
How owners were told
Owners received a text message prompting them to download a file of about 65MB. The file was a Windows XP/Vista-only .EXE, which left Mac users stuck. Windows 7 and Macintosh users were told to call Rogers for instructions.
Before you update
- The update deletes everything on the device, so back it up first.
- You needed a Windows XP or Vista computer to run the file.
Internet access and the 911 concern
Rogers said customers who had not installed the update could have problems reaching 911. As a precaution, it would temporarily disable internet access for Dream and Magic users on Sunday, January 24 at 6:00AM EST. Voice and text messaging were not affected. After a customer completed the update, internet access was to be re-enabled within 24 hours.
Compensation
Customers on data plans were to be credited one month of data fees, excluding roaming. The credit was to show on invoices within 60 days.
