With each update the YouTube app gets better and better, bringing great features and a beautiful design. However, two important features never found their way to any of the updates. Background playback and offline playback never seem to make the cut, at least until today. Google posted on the official YouTube Blog that they will be adding offline playback to the Android app before year’s end.
Though this might seem like a minor update, offline caching is an important part of every app. Considering most users have a limited data plan as well as limited bandwidth, having the ability to load contents over WiFi and watching them later would do a lot for that boring morning commute.
Still, there’s no word on when to expect background playback, so if you want to use YouTube as a music player while you do other tasks on your Android device, you’ve got to keep on waiting. We’ll let you know when Google’s promise translates into an actual update. Until then, let us know your thoughts on the comment section below.
