It’s now a week into July and Google has finally updated their Android Distribution numbers accordingly. For those unfamiliar, these numbers are updated at roughly the start of every month for developers to look at so they can generalize what version of Android their potential install base is running and act upon it.
As of today, Android 4.4 KitKat has finally surpassed most versions of Android in terms of marketshare to sit at 17.9%, up 4.3% from last month. Android 2.3 Gingerbread is still dying a slow death, and it’s now at 13.5%, down 1.3% from last month. It’s safe to assume that this significant increase is the result of KitKat OTAs for Samsung Galaxy S3 and Note 2 users and just users upgrading their devices to ones that run 4.4.
It’s too bad Android L wasn’t included in the distribution chart but it does make sense since it’s still strictly a developer preview. Although, it’s only a few more months until a final version of the OS gets released so OEMs should get prepared for the incoming source drops from Google.
